Reset Microsoft Office Product Activation Status

By | August 22, 2016
When you purchase and activate an Office product, the activation information is stored in the computer. There can be times when you want to reset the product to its initial activation state. With an Office 365 subscription, it’s quite easy to deactivate the license from your account’s settings screen. However, deactivating online may not be feasible given the situation. Some reasons being that the destination computer is offline, you want to remove the license immediately or the destination computer might have a retail product installed that the cloud cannot deactivate the license.

In such scenarios, you can remove the license in the local computer using following steps.

  1. Identify the Windows and Office versions installed in your computer.
  2. Based on your version of Windows and Office, navigate to the following path using Windows Command Prompt.
    1. Windows 32-bit and Office 32-bit
      1. For Office 2016 – C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16
      2. For Office 2013 – C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15
      3. For Office 2010 – C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
    2. Windows 64-bit and Office 64-bit
      1. For Office 2016 – C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16
      2. For Office 2013 – C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15
      3. For Office 2010 – C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
    3. Windows 64-bit and Office 32-bit
      1. For Office 2016 – C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16
      2. For Office 2013 – C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15
      3. For Office 2010 – C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
  3. Type the following command to investigate the products installed.
    cscript OSPP.VBS /dstatus
  4. Above command will display the products installed in relevant to the Office version you have selected (figure 1).

  5. In above screenshot, I have underlined product names in red and what I have covered in white are the last 5 digits of the product key. You need these information for the next step.
  6. From the output, identify the product that you want to remove the license using the product name and mark the last 5 digits of the product key.
  7. Run below command to remove the license information from the computer for the chosen product (replace ABCDEF with the last 5 digits you’ve noted in the earlier step).
    cscript OSPP.VBS /unpkey:ABCDEF
  8. When that is successful, you will see a screen similar to below.

  9. Next time when you open your Office product, it will take you through the activation process again.

Thank you for this. Having multiple Office activations on one corporate account, one can get lost in what key is installed on what PC.
